Camren Bicondova, 15, who plays Selina Kyle on “Gotham,” seemed a little nervous, and her slight awkwardness only added to her endearing character. Random facts we learned about Camren Bicondova during her 2015 Motor City Comic-Con Panel: Her favorite band is Alabama Shakes. Her favorite superhero is Catwoman, and no other. She likes dancing because it helps her *make expressive arm movements* Her cat’s name is Mr. G. Her favorite colors are blue and lavender. If she wasn’t Catwoman, she'd rather have telepathy. Her panel was pretty full, as Batman and “Gotham” fans filled the seats. It was her first con and she said it was great.
“I really like Detroit. I’ve been here once and I really liked it,” she said. The moderator asked her if she was a geek. “I wasn’t before the role. I didn’t really know much about the Batman franchise,” the actress said. “Once I got the role I started to read the all the comic books. So I would say now I’m a geek.” When she auditioned, she thought she was auditioning for a girl named “Lucy.” She didn’t kow she was up for the part of Selina Kyle, the infamous Catwoman. “I guess I just did what I thought was right and it worked out,” she said. “I felt like I would have been really nervous if I knew I was auditioning for Selina Kyle.” She talked a little about her dance background. Camren been started dancing when she was 5, and went into the dance industry when she was 10. “Sometimes I can be a very awkward person and dance helps me,” Bicondova said, making fun, exaggerated arm movements. Her stuntwoman does the flipping for the character on the show. “My back does not work that way,” Camren said. To look for inspiration for the role of Catwoman, she went back to Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman in the 1960s, and the comic books, “Because that’s where the real stories are,” she said. “I wanted to see, television wise, who brought what but then I realized that they were playing Catwoman and I’m playing Selina Kyle. I can’t really bring what they bring,” she explained. One fan asked what other shows she likes watching. “I like watching ‘The Flash’ and ‘Arrow,’” she said. “I think 'Gotham' is really good.” One fan asked who her favorite superhero was beside Catwoman, but she couldn’t pick another. “I can’t pick another one. I’m sorry. It’s Catwoman,” she said. Another fan asked which characters from the comic books she’s excited to see on the show. “I’m really excited for Harley Quinn to show up,” Camren said. She’s also excited for the Riddler, the Joker, and Mr. Freeze. “I read that online. I don’t know anything else. I know what everyone else knows,” she said. One fan asked how it felt pushing someone out of a window. It was “actually pretty fun,” Camren said, explaining that they used giant blow-up contraptions in the scene. Question: What do you like most about David Mazouz, who plays Bruce Wayne in the show. “He’s great, he’s my little buddy. He’s really cool,” she said. The moderator asked how she felt knowing that Selina inspires young women. “I like playing Selina because she’s very complex,” Camren said. “I feel like there are a lot of female characters nowadays who are very one dimensional. That’s what I like about ‘Gotham.’ We have many women in ‘Gotham’ who are very independent and they do what they feel is right.” “I have to show the emotions that Selina is trying to hide,” she said. “She’s very guarded. For you to bring up that they could inspire people is amazing.” Her favorite scene to shoot was the season finale. “When the detectives and Carmine and Penguin were all chained up and Danny Cannon, the director, had me go through all the them, leading up talking to Carmine. And this was my first time working with Robin. I got to mess with him. He said ‘don’t tickle me.’ So that was really fun, getting to torture him,” she said. Camren said there wasn’t a scene she didn’t like and got offended at the moderator for asking such a question. “The writing’s so good. There’s not a scene that’s not good.” In future seasons, she wants more fight scenes, but she didn't name with who. Question: How are you like your character? “I feel like I’m fairly independent. I’m 15 so I can’t be that independent,” Camren said. She relates to Selina because she likes being alone. “She’s not really an introvert, but she likes to be by herself,” she said. She explained they shoot for 10 days per episode and they get each get a script within four days of shooting. Someone asked about “wow” moments, which, for Camren, was getting to work with Jada Pinkett Smith. “I was really excited about that,” she said, adding that she really wanted Bruno to write a scene with them together. One fan asked about Selina (I didn’t hear the full question, but it was something about good v. evil), and Camren gave a fantastic paradox as an answer. “I feel like she does bad things out of the goodness of her heart,” she said. “For example, she pushed Brent out of the window. So that's a crime, but he was going to tell on them. She did a good-bad thing.” The moderator asked how she felt after they finished filming season one. She said she wanted a crepe. The audience laughed, but I thought it was a perfectly reasonable emotion. “I haven’t gotten it yet,” Camren said. She went to Key West for vacation to visit family after shooting. One fan asked what it was like working with Ben Mackenzie because they have so many scenes together. Working with Ben is “great,” she said. “He’s like the father of the cast. He’s always looking out for everyone, making sure everyone’s set.” She starts filming season two June 29 and they’ll film until March. Question: Who do you hang out with most on set? She’s usually filming by herself, but she hangs out with everyone on set, she said. Superman” and she said she’s really excited for it. “I think that’s going to be amazing,” she said. She declared she was Team Batman.
